While looking through the bellhousings, I
discovered I have no idea what I'm looking at.
What does the height and bore refer to? What do
I look for in a new housing? |
ANSWER: The height refers to the distance
from the engine face to the transmission face. The reason this
is important is that Ford used a couple of short input shafts
and shallow bell housings back in the day, but on modern
Mustangs the bell is deeper and the input shafts are
considerably longer. If you need one, we will make sure you are
ordering the right one for the job.
The bore is the size of the hole in the back of the bell where
the transmission bearing retainer slides in. Basically, it's the
big hole. Different transmissions have different bearing
retainer diameters, however Ford used the same dimension on all
transmissions right through the t5, so you are going to find
almost every Ford application bell will have the same size hole.
Our Scattershields are INCREDIBLE. Their spin forged
construction means that they weigh half what a Lakewood does,
yet they test out at 80,000psi, more than twice what the typical
Lakewood tests. They are also a lot more accurate to center,
which means they are more likely to put your input shaft
directly into your crank, while the other brands often require
corrective dowel pins in the engine to line them up.
